About Theresa Russell
Theresa Russell is an American actress whose career has often centered on intense, unconventional, and psychologically complex film roles. Born Theresa Lynn Paup in San Diego in 1957, she made her film debut as Cecilia Brady in Elia Kazan’s The Last Tycoon in 1976, appearing alongside Robert De Niro, Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, and other major actors of the era.
Russell became especially associated with bold independent and art-house films, including Nicolas Roeg’s Bad Timing, Eureka, Insignificance, and Track 29. She also gave one of her best-known mainstream performances in the 1987 thriller Black Widow, opposite Debra Winger, playing a seductive serial killer whose charm masks a lethal pattern. Later credits include Whore, Kafka, Wild Things, The Believer, Empire Falls, Spider-Man 3, and Liz & Dick.
Known less as a conventional Hollywood star than as a fearless character actress, Russell built a distinctive screen presence through roles that were often sensual, troubled, mysterious, or morally ambiguous.
