Disabled comments for politicians and political commentators

Content Moderation Technical

The reports have been flooded with comments on political accounts. People just can't help themselves apparently, and they keep flooding these comment sections with politically charged comments. Can we just complete disable the comments on those pages? I think it would save a lot of trouble.

Comments (14)

We've already been doing this for a while.
We monitor comments, and when we believe a profile page gets mostly political comments, we add them to the "no-comments" list.
Which profile do you have in mind?

@Pryda Just based on what I've seen recently: Tomi Lahren, Kristi Noem, Lauren Boebert, Casey DeSantis, Jasmine Crockett

@Pryda Rashida Tlaib is another.

Does the new ‘contribute’ feature work effectively enough to allow the comment sections to remain open for these more controversial profiles? Or is it too much like a whack-a-mole game? For example, I’d certainly like to comment on AOC’s hot bod without a need to rant about whether or not i like her politics. But I understand how certain profiles can be flooded with nastiness.

@3rdwave
Honestly the filth comments are still there but for the most part they seem to be dealt with quickly

@3rdwave: This is the question on our mind right now and why we're waiting a bit.
Should we close the comments section of more pages, like the ones @Zork86 listed? Or can we open some closed ones, like Melania Trump and Michelle Obama, and rely on the community to clean up?

@Pryda and @Zork86 I just don't know and fine that you're waiting a bit. I'd be happy to base my opinion on what you're seeing. I am not in any rush to open those political profiles just to post fun, "I think you're sexy" type comments. If they're inundated with political crap, I'm happy to leave them locked until you think an effective process is in place to limit all that. No matter what side anyone is on - I find it all annoying (considering I come to this site for fun and to escape all that!).

Posted by 3rdwave 2026-09-05 03:11

Or remove politicans from site.

Posted by GuyverOne 2026-09-05 13:27

Removing them altogether is a bit too far.Just because some people are idiots and cannot refrain from discussing politics everyone suddenly shouldn't be be able to enjoy some hot babe?
People find any reason to talk politics even without a rime or reason anyway.
I think politicans or babes who poeple tend to be wiredly political about just need a bit more moderation than others thats it.

If you have politicans on the site people are going to talk about their politics, either leave them to it or remove politicans profiles is the sensible options imo.

Comments on those profiles should probably be kept off, unless the contributor community is up for endless whack-a-mole. Though some of us might be, who knows.

The endless whack-a-mole is what I would like to avoid. The contribute page is busy enough as it is. I think we'd be better off just shutting these problematic comment sections down than having to constantly police them.

Posted by Zork86 2026-09-09 00:04

We'll keep these comment sections closed for now. We've extended the list of closed comment sections with the ones @Zork86 suggested.

Revise this to US politicians and political commentators. You're the ones going crazy over politics recently.
