Marilyn Ann Taylor, known professionally as Marilyn Chambers, was an American pornographic actress, exotic dancer, model, actress and vice-presidential candidate. She was known for her 1972 hardcore film debut, Behind the Green Door, and her 1980 pornographic film Insatiable. She is often regarded as one of the first pornstars.
Chambers started her career as a model and actress. When Procter & Gamble was casting about for an image of a fresh-faced young lady to use on boxes of Ivory Snow laundry detergent in the early 1970s, they selected the now-iconic photograph of an 18 year old Marilyn Chambers posing as a loving young mother holding a bright-eyed, adorable baby. That photo became synonymous with the much-touted purity of the product (99 44/100% pure, according to the company), a circumstance that proved ironically embarrassing for Procter & Gamble when they learned that the model whose picture now represented their product had since moved to San Francisco and turned her hand (and other assorted body parts) to the making of porn films.
Chambers never intended to do hardcore films. She had a few bit roles in mainstream movies but became frustrated her acting and modeling career wasn't taking off like she wanted. She moved to San Francisco in 1970 not long after she had shot the Ivory Snow photo in hopes to break into the burgeoning film industry there. Not finding much acting or modeling work, she became desperate and worked as a topless and bottomless dancer in various clubs. In 1972 at the age of 20, she responded to an ad for a movie but soon realized that it was a porn shoot. The movie was Behind the Green Door, and it was being directed by Jim and Artie Mitchell, who owned the O'Farrell Theatre and were branching into hardcore pornography. Chamber's first balked at being in such a movie, fearing it would hurt her chances of mainstream work, but was soon convinced by Jim and Artie. She asked for 10% of the gross, which Jim flat out rejected. But Artie felt her beauty and strong resemblance to actress Cybill Shepherd would sell the movie, and they both agreed to her demands.
After finishing the movie, Chambers told the brothers about being in the Ivory Snow ad. The Mitchells saw this as a great way to promote the movie and began promoting it as starring the "Ivory Snow Girl". Procter & Gamble were horrified and pulled all the ads featuring Chambers. The scandal would catapult Chambers into stardom and cement her image as the "wholesome girl next door who also did dirty movies". Chambers also had the distinction of being in the first interracial scene in porn, which was in Behind the Green Door.
She starred in films like Resurrection of Eve (1973) and Inside Marilyn Chambers (1975), but her attempt to cross over to mainstream with David Cronenberg's Rabid (1977) as Rose, a vampire-like character, was her most notable non-adult role, earning critical acclaim for her dramatic performance. Chambers also pursued music, releasing the disco single "Benihana" in 1976, which charted on Billboard's Hot Disco Singles, and tried stand-up comedy and Off-Broadway theater in the 1980s, including The Mind with the Naughty Man (1978) and Sex Surrogate (1985)
After getting no other roles offered after Rabid, Chambers was forced to return to hardcore films and rejoined the Mitchell brothers for Beyond DeSade (1979) and Never a Tender Moment (1979). Unlike the story-driven and artistic Behind the Green Door, these were shorter movies that relied on shocking sexual acts, including Chambers fisting and being fisted in lesbian scenes. In 1980, she agreed to star in the movie Insatiable for 15% of the gross and a flat fee of $250,000, which would be the equivalent of $1 million in 2025. The film would be one of the highest-grossing porn movies of all time and is considered one of the last of the porn chic era. Chambers would also sign with Caballero Home Video for a series called Marilyn Chambers Private Fantasies, which would include 16 videos released until 1987. The movies would combine new scenes with various clipped scenes from the 1970s. In one of the new scenes she filmed in 1983, she had sex with a drug addicted John Holmes, who could not maintain an erection. The Mitchell brothers tried to bring her back to film a sequel to Behind the Green Door, but she refused unless she was also given a producer credit and partial ownership of the rights. They would release Behind the Green Door 2 in 1986 without Chambers, and it would be a massive flop. Chambers would call her movies in the 1980s and 1990s, a low point in her life. She was addicted to cocaine and merely did them for the money, and much preferred to do anything but adult films. She returned for a few movies in her 40s in the early 2000s.
Married three times—to Doug Chapin (1972–1974), Chuck Traynor (1974–1985, the former husband of Linda Lovelace), and William Taylor Jr. (1991–1994)—she had a daughter, McKenna Taylor, with Taylor in 1991, per Wikipedia. Her net worth at death was estimated at $1.5 million, per unverified sources like CelebsAgeWiki. But sources close to Chambers said she died mostly penniless. Chambers died on April 12, 2009, at age 56 in Santa Clarita, California, from a cerebral hemorrhage and aneurysm related to heart disease due to her long abuse of cocaine and alcohol. As of August 6, 2025, her legacy as a porno chic pioneer endures, with Behind the Green Door considered a landmark film.
