About Iolanda Gigliotti

Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti (better known by her stage name Dalida) was an iconic Egyptian-born Italian-French singer, actress, and international superstar whose career spanned over 30 years. Born on January 17, 1933, in Cairo, Egypt, to Italian immigrant parents (her father was a violinist at the Cairo Opera House), she was the middle child with two brothers, Orlando and Bruno. After winning Miss Egypt in 1954, she moved to Paris, where she launched her music career in 1956 with her breakthrough hit "Bambino," quickly becoming one of the biggest-selling artists in French music history.
Dalida recorded in over 10 languages (including French, Italian, Arabic, German, Spanish, English, and more), selling more than 170 million records worldwide. Her powerful, emotional voice and dramatic style made classics like "Paroles... Paroles..." (with Alain Delon), "Il venait d'avoir 18 ans," "J'attendrai," "Ciao amore ciao," and "Je suis malade" timeless. She was a trailblazer—winning the first Oscar Mondial du Succès du Disque in 1958—and starred in films like The Sixth Day while embracing fashion, beauty, and a glamorous persona that influenced generations.
Her life was marked by both triumphs and deep personal tragedies, including the suicides of loved ones close to her (like Luigi Tenco in 1967 and others), which contributed to her struggles with depression. Tragically, she died by suicide on May 3, 1987, at age 54 in Paris, leaving a note saying life had become unbearable. She's buried in Montmartre Cemetery, with a bust honoring her at Place Dalida in Montmartre.
Her legacy endures as one of the greatest voices in European music—melancholic yet vibrant, multilingual, and eternally beloved. Fans still celebrate her through tributes, biopics (like the 2017 film Dalida), and her music's timeless appeal.
Rest in peace, Dalida/Iolanda—your voice, passion, and unbreakable spirit continue to enchant the world. 🎤💔✨ Dalida IolandaGigliotti #MusicLegend
