About Hilde Rens
Hilde Rens (better known by her stage name Yasmine) was a beloved Belgian (Flemish) singer, television presenter, radio host, and LGBTQ+ icon. Born on March 3, 1972, in Antwerp, Belgium, she rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with her powerful, emotive voice and heartfelt pop/folk-inspired music. Hits like "Dans me," "Rusteloos," "Weak," and her Dutch translations of Leonard Cohen songs (from the acclaimed 2004 album Vandaag (Het morgen van gisteren)) showcased her talent for blending vulnerability, strength, and melody.
She started young—debuting on TV talent shows at 17—and became a household name through albums, live performances, and presenting roles on Flemish TV and radio. As an openly lesbian artist (married to Marianne Dupon at one point), she was a trailblazing figure for the holebi (LGBTQ+) community in Belgium, using her platform to advocate for visibility and acceptance while balancing her roles as a performer, partner, and mother.
Her music often explored love, loss, and introspection, resonating deeply with fans across generations. Tragically, she passed away on June 25, 2009, at age 37. Her legacy endures through her songs (still streamed and shared), fan memorials (like the Facebook page "Yasmine - Hilde Rens"), documentaries such as Dit was Yasmine, and the inspiration she provided to many in the Flemish music and queer scenes.
Rest in peace, Yasmine/Hilde—your voice, courage, and beautiful soul continue to touch hearts and live on in Flemish music history. 🎤💔🌹 Yasmine HildeRens #BelgianIcon
