About Evan Barker

Evan Barker is an American writer, columnist, author, and former Democratic political operative. She is the author of Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative, a 2026 political memoir published by Threshold Editions. Barker has written about American politics, political campaigning, health policy, and working-class politics, and has published columns and essays in outlets including The Free Press and The Times.

Barker was raised in the Kansas City area in a working-class family. She has described growing up in a union family and becoming involved in Democratic politics at a young age. According to her publisher biography, she is a first-generation college graduate and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in 2015.

Barker began working in Democratic politics while still in high school. She has said that she worked as an intern on Barack Obama's first presidential campaign and subsequently served as a field organizer for Hillary Clinton. She later worked as a political consultant and fundraiser for Democratic candidates and organizations.

According to Barker, her political work included campaigns for members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate, as well as district attorney campaigns and progressive political organizations. She has stated that she raised tens of millions of dollars for Democratic candidates and causes.

Barker became increasingly critical of the Democratic Party during the 2020s. In 2024, she publicly announced that she had voted for Donald Trump in the presidential election, despite having spent much of her career working for Democrats. Her account of the political shift received attention in the American media.

Following her departure from Democratic politics, Barker became a columnist and independent writer. Her essays have addressed political ideology, the Democratic Party, working-class voters, health policy, and her experiences in political fundraising and campaigning. She has also written for The Free Press and The Times.

Barker also publishes through Substack and hosts The Evan Barker Podcast. Her Substack describes her as a former progressive campaign strategist and author of Nothing Left.

Barker's first book, Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative, was published by Threshold Editions on July 28, 2026. The 288-page memoir examines her career in Democratic politics and her subsequent disillusionment with the party. The book describes Barker's experiences working with political campaigns, donors, consultants, and progressive organizations. It also recounts her decision to vote for Trump in 2024 and her argument that the Democratic Party had become increasingly disconnected from working-class voters. The book was also released as an audiobook, narrated by Barker.

Barker has described herself as having moved away from the Democratic Party while continuing to advocate for economic policies aimed at working-class Americans. Her political writing has criticized progressive approaches to identity politics, immigration, and economic policy, while emphasizing economic populism and cultural moderation.
