Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer, author, speaker, and inspirational public figure whose life story became widely known after she survived a tiger shark attack at age 13 that resulted in the loss of her left arm. Born Bethany Meilani Hamilton in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, in 1990, she grew up in a surfing family, began competing as a child, and was already an accomplished young surfer before the 2003 attack.

Rather than ending her surfing career, the injury became part of a remarkable comeback. Hamilton returned to surfing within weeks, later won the Explorer Women’s division at the 2005 NSSA National Championships, and began competing on the professional circuit in 2007. Her memoir, Soul Surfer, and the 2011 film of the same name brought her story of resilience, faith, family, and determination to a broad audience.

Hamilton has continued to surf, write, mentor, and speak publicly, sharing a motivational message rooted in resilience, family, and her Christian faith. Her later work includes the documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, public speaking, family-focused resources, and charitable efforts through her foundation supporting youth, amputees, and families.

Married to Adam Dirks in August 2013, they share four children!
