Vanessa del Rio, born Ana María Sánchez on March 31, 1952, in Harlem, New York, was raised as an only child by Cuban and Puerto Rican immigrant parents. Growing up in a strict Catholic household, she was influenced by her mother’s love for Spanish-language films featuring Argentinian actress Isabel Sarli, whose charismatic power over men inspired del Rio’s desire for similar influence. She dropped out of school in the eighth grade and later lived with a criminal boyfriend in stolen Volkswagen Beetles before becoming a waitress, topless barmaid, go-go dancer, streetwalker, and call girl. Del Rio entered the adult film industry in 1974, debuting in China Doll for $150 to cover her rent, adopting the stage name “Vanessa” from a childhood friend and “del Rio” from actress Dolores del Río at a friend’s suggestion.

Porn historian and former director Bill Margold said Del Rio represented the grimy and seedy NYC porn scene from the 1970s and early 80s that stood in direct contrast to the California blonde porn that would later be made in Los Angeles. "The adult movies in NYC had their own grimy feel. There were wise guys on set watching everything cause the Mafia was funding the movies. And the women were not beauty queens and were often prostitutes who also worked all the numerous adult theatres in the city. These women had ethnic noses, bad teeth, and spoke in thick accents from NYC and New Jersey. There were no blonde Barbies like you would later see dominate California porn".

As of July 8, 2025, del Rio, now 73, lives in New York, maintaining a low-profile life. She runs her website, creating original content, and makes occasional public appearances. A feature film, The Latin from Manhattan, based on her life and starring Vivian Lamolli, began production in 2019, though updates are scarce and it seems to be in Development Hell. Feminist scholars like Mirelle Miller-Young and Juana María Rodríguez cite her as a pioneering woman of color in adult entertainment, with her TASCHEN biography celebrated for its candor. Her films and cultural impact, including rap song references, keep her legacy alive in vintage adult film communities.
