About Tiziana Cantone
Tiziana Cantone, later changed to Tiziana Giglio was an Italian woman from Casalnuovo di Napoli (near Naples) who became a high-profile victim of non-consensual intimate image distribution (revenge porn/image-based sexual abuse). In 2015, she sent amateur videos of herself engaging in consensual sex acts (filmed with a partner) to several people, including an ex-boyfriend, reportedly to make him jealous. The ex uploaded them online, where they went viral, leading to widespread mockery, memes (notably her phrase "Stai girando? Bravo!" / "Are you filming? Good!"), cyberbullying, job loss, and severe harassment. She fought legally for years to have the videos removed from sites and search engines (winning partial orders but being ordered to pay €20,000 in legal costs shortly before her death), changed her name, moved, and struggled with depression and prior suicide attempts.
She died on September 13, 2016, at age 33 in Mugnano di Napoli (at her aunt's home), Italy. Initial reports and investigations ruled it suicide by hanging (using a silk foulard/scarf on a fitness tool in the basement). She had attempted suicide twice before. Her mother attributed it to relentless online humiliation, failure to achieve full justice, depression, and panic attacks. This sparked national outrage in Italy over revenge porn, cyberbullying, the "right to be forgotten," and internet accountability. In 2021, prosecutors reopened the case, exhumed her body, and investigated possible murder due to new DNA evidence (traces from two men at the scene) and inconsistencies, but no updates indicate a change from the suicide ruling in major sources—Wikipedia and news still list it as suicide, with the murder probe noted but unresolved or not altering the conclusion.
