Sonia is a Brazilian actress with US citizenship, launched internationally by the film "Donna Flor and her two husbands".
Fifth of seven children, she lost her father when she was only eight years old. Before attempting an artistic career she worked as a secretary, and later studied as a theater actress.

She is known in the English-speaking world for her Golden Globe Award–nominated performances in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and Moon over Parador (1988). She also received a BAFTA Award nomination in 1981 for Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (first released in 1976). For the 1994 television film The Burning Season, she was nominated for an Emmy Award and a third Golden Globe Award.

She won 2016 best actress at Biarritz Fest, Fênix Fest, Havana Fest, Mar Del Plata Fest, Lima Fest, San Diego Film Critics and Platino Awards with Aquarius besides the Gramado Film Fest twice 1981 Best Actress with I Love You and 2001 Best Supporting Actress for Memórias Póstumas
