About Sol Pais
Sol Pais (full name Sol Leonina Pais) was an 18-year-old American high school student from Surfside, Florida (Miami area), who attended Miami Beach Senior High School. She was described by classmates and neighbors as quiet, intelligent, artistic (taking honors English and AP studio art classes), and someone who mostly kept to herself—blending into the background without drawing much attention in person.
She gained national headlines in April 2019 when she flew one-way from Miami to Denver, Colorado, just days before the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre (April 20, 1999). Authorities later revealed she had expressed an "infatuation" with the Columbine event (sharing related thoughts online, including journal entries), purchased a pump-action shotgun and ammunition legally upon arrival (near Columbine), and made statements interpreted as credible threats to schools in the Denver area. This triggered a massive FBI manhunt, school closures/lockdowns across hundreds of districts in the metro area, and widespread media coverage as she was considered armed and extremely dangerous.
Tragically, Sol had already died by suicide via self-inflicted gunshot wound near Echo Lake at the base of Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, Colorado, on April 15 (the day she arrived), before the full search even began—her body was discovered on April 17 with the shotgun nearby. Autopsy reports confirmed no drugs or alcohol in her system, and the death was ruled a suicide. The incident sparked discussions on mental health, copycat risks around anniversaries of tragedies, online expressions of distress, and how threats are assessed.
Her story remains a somber reminder of hidden struggles among young people, the impact of fixation on past events, and the importance of mental health support. She was remembered by those who knew her personally as a bright but reserved teen with a future ahead.
Rest in peace, Sol—may your story continue to highlight the need for compassion, early intervention, and understanding for those in pain. 💔🕊️
