About Shauna Macdonald

Shauna is an Edinburgh, Scotland-based actress and artistic director. Born in Malaysia, she moved to Edinburgh, at age three. A shy child who overcame a lisp through speech therapy and early involvement in musical theatre, she discovered acting at a young age. She is best known for her gripping lead performance as Sarah Carter in the acclaimed horror film The Descent (2005) and its sequel.
She trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and began her screen career at 17 with a role in The Debt Collector (1999) alongside Billy Connolly.
Shauna gained wider attention as MI5 officer Sam Buxton in the hit BBC series Spooks (2003–2004). Her standout turn in The Descent established her as a scream queen and earned critical praise, including a Saturn Award nomination. She has since appeared in a range of projects, including Filth (2013) opposite James McAvoy, White Chamber (2018)—for which she won a Scottish BAFTA—Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and TV series such as The Cry, In Plain Sight, and Outlander. She also voices Professor Squawkencluck in the animated series Danger Mouse.
In addition to acting, Shauna serves as co-artistic director of Edinburgh Youth Theatre and runs public speaking workshops. She is married to actor Cal MacAninch, with whom she has three children. They live in Edinburgh. Versatile and rooted in Scottish theatre, she continues to balance film, television, and stage work.
