Shania is a Corseaux, Switzerland-based singer-songwriter known as the “Queen of Country Pop.” She is widely regarded as one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide, and the best-selling female country artist in history.
She grew up primarily in Timmins, Ontario after her parents’ divorce when she was about two; her mother remarried Jerry Twain, an Ojibwe man, and she later took his surname. She began performing young, singing in local bars from around age 8 to help support her family amid poverty and took on responsibility for her younger siblings after her mother and stepfather died in a 1987 car accident.
She signed with Mercury Nashville in the early 1990s and released her self-titled debut in 1993. Breakthrough came with The Woman in Me (1995), followed by the massive crossover success of Come On Over (1997)—one of the best-selling albums ever by a female artist and the best-selling country album of all time—featuring hits like “You’re Still the One,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” and “Any Man of Mine.” Later albums include Up! (2002), Now (2017, after a long hiatus partly due to health issues including Lyme disease-related vocal problems), Queen of Me (2023), and Little Miss Twain (2026). She has won five Grammy Awards, performed multiple Las Vegas residencies, toured extensively, and written an autobiography: From This Moment On, 2011.
She has long been a resident of Corseaux, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva, where she lives with her husband Frédéric Thiébaud. She also owns properties in places such as the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and elsewhere, and travels for performances. She has one son from her previous marriage to producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange.
