About Penny Oleksiak

Penny is a Los Angeles, CA-based Olympic and World Championship freestyle and butterfly swimmer. In the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, she won four medals, including a gold in the 100-meter freestyle, making her the first Canadian to win four medals in the same Summer Games. Her performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics further cemented her status, where she added three more medals to her tally, bringing her total Olympic medal count to seven. Notably, she holds the Canadian record for the most Olympic medals won by an athlete.
In July 2025, Oleksiak voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) notified her of an apparent anti-doping rule violation for whereabouts failures. She was later banned from competing for two years and will only be eligible for competition again in 2027.

A great, great shame, but you have to be available at all times, I hope this unfortunate matter doesn't take away her achievements. She would be able to compete at LA28 if selected, but she will definitely miss the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

Has she retired from swimming?

I remember her tying with Simone Manuel for the gold medal in the 100 metres freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Not one national anthem played but two, America and Canada.
