Moon Unit Zappa is an American actress, singer, author, and occasional performer best known as the eldest child of legendary musician Frank Zappa and his wife Gail Zappa. Moon was born in New York City and raised in an unconventional Laurel Canyon household amid the rock scene of the 1970s. She gained fame at age 14 with her spoken-word vocals on her father's 1982 hit song "Valley Girl," which became a surprise Top 40 success and defined a cultural stereotype of 1980s Southern California youth. She went on to appear in films such as National Lampoon's European Vacation, pursue acting roles, work as an MTV VJ, and explore writing and other creative pursuits. In 2024, she published her candid memoir Earth to Moon, reflecting on her complex childhood, family dynamics, the impact of fame, and her personal growth after losing both parents. Now often going by Moon Zappa, she remains active as a writer, podcaster, and entrepreneur while navigating life as a celebrity child turned independent artist.
