About Monika Dannemann
Monika Dannemann (full name Monika Charlotte Dannemann, June 24, 1945 – April 5, 1996) was a German figure skater, painter, and artist best remembered as the last girlfriend of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Born in Düsseldorf, West Germany, she competed in figure skating during her youth (representing West Germany in national events in the late 1950s/early 1960s) before transitioning to painting and a more artistic life.
She met Hendrix in January 1969 after being invited to one of his concerts in Düsseldorf, sparking an on-and-off relationship that lasted until his death. Monika was with him in London during his final days in September 1970—she took some of the last known photos of him (in her garden with his guitar) and was the last person to see him alive before he tragically passed away on September 18, 1970. She later described their connection deeply in her 1995 book The Inner World of Jimi Hendrix, a tribute featuring her original oil paintings inspired by his music, lyrics, spirituality, and spirit—along with personal insights into his thoughts and their time together.
Later in life, she reportedly married German guitarist Uli Jon Roth (of Scorpions fame). Monika was an advocate for Hendrix's legacy, sharing her memories through interviews, writings, and art, though her accounts sometimes sparked controversy and debates among fans and biographers.
Tragically, she died by suicide at age 50 in Seaford, East Sussex, England, shortly after a court case involving a libel dispute related to her Hendrix stories.
Her legacy lives on through her artistic tributes to Jimi, her paintings reflecting his essence, and the poignant role she played in one of rock's most iconic stories— a blend of love, creativity, and enduring mystery.
Rest in peace, Monika—your art, memories, and connection to Jimi continue to inspire Hendrix fans and artists alike. 🎸🖼️💔 MonikaDannemann JimiHendrix #InnerWorld
