About Milica Kostic
Milica Kostić (Милица Костић) was a young Serbian high school student from Strojinci near Brus, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), who became a tragic symbol of courage, resistance, and the fight against sexual violence in the region.
A student at the Kruševac High School of Medicine, she was known for her determination and bright future. In September 1974, at just 18 years old, she was lured into an apartment by a group of men who attempted to assault her. To escape the rape and defend her dignity and freedom, Milica jumped from the 12th-floor window of the building. She survived the fall initially, provided a detailed account to the police from her hospital bed (describing the perpetrators and events), but succumbed to her severe injuries two days later.
Her story shocked Yugoslavia at the time, sparking widespread outrage, discussions on women's safety, and becoming a poignant emblem of bravery in the face of unimaginable threat. Memorial sites, articles, and tributes (including a dedicated page at milicakostic.rs) honor her as someone who chose death over violation, emphasizing her desire to live but her resolve to protect her autonomy.
Rest in peace, Milica—your courage in that final moment and the legacy of strength you left continue to inspire awareness and remembrance in Serbia and beyond. 💔🕊️ MilicaKostić NeverForget
