About Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is an acclaimed American actress and singer, born on November 17, 1958, in Lombard, Illinois, to Italian-American parents and raised in Oak Park, where she developed an early interest in the arts and initially aspired to a career in opera. After studying drama at the University of Illinois and gaining experience in school plays and regional theater, she moved to New York and made her Broadway debut as an understudy in the 1980 revival of West Side Story. She transitioned to film with her breakout role as Gina Montana, Al Pacino's sister, in Brian De Palma's Scarface (1983), followed by critical acclaim for her performance as Carmen opposite Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money (1986), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe nod. Mastrantonio became a prominent figure in late-1980s and early-1990s cinema with memorable roles including the determined Lindsey Brigman in James Cameron's The Abyss (1989) and Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) opposite Kevin Costner. She took on fewer film or television roles in the 90s, mostly in lower-budget projects with the notable exception of The Perfect Storm (2000). She has had only one feature film since then, concentrating on recurring roles on television.
