An FBI investigation revealed that McFarland coerced a minor into explicit conduct in 2014 and possessed illicit images in 2015. He faced up to 50 years in federal prison, and his accomplice, Meredith Howell, was also arrested. The case marked a disturbing contrast to the devoted caregiver image Lucy had described during her final years.
