About Lillian Russell
Lillian Russell (born Helen Louise Leonard) was an American actress and singer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as "The American Beauty", she was celebrated for her clear soprano voice, stage presence, and flamboyant personality.
She rose to fame in the 1880s performing for producer Tony Pastor and became the foremost singer of comic operas in America, starring in works by Gilbert and Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach.
From 1899 to 1904, she joined the famous Weber and Fields's burlesque company, participating in numerous musical comedy performances.
When she began facing vocal difficulties in the early 1900s, she switched to straight dramatic theater and vaudeville tours before retiring around 1919.
She became famous for her lavish lifestyle, had four marriages, and maintained a four-decade relationship with the wealthy tycoon James Buchanan "Diamond Jim" Brady.
Later in life, she became an advocate for women's suffrage and equal rights, wrote beauty and health columns for newspapers, and lectured publicly.
Her life story was later popularized in the 1940 biographical film "Lillian Russell", starring Alice Faye.
