About Dorothy McGowan
Dorothy McGowan was the daughter of Irish immigrants Sarah (nÊe Philbin) and Michael McGowan, and was born in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn in 1939. She had a sister called Mary as well as two brothers, Peter and James. Both brothers went on to become Police officers.
As a successful model Dorothy was one of photographer William Klein's favorites. She appeared on countless covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, as well as other publications from the 1960s.
After the release of the film Who Are You, Polly Magoo?, in which she starred a lead role in the film she slowly withdrew from public life.
This film was a satirical arthouse style mockumentary spoofing of the fashion world and its obvious excesses.
