Cynthia Ann Christine Rothrock is an American actress, producer, and world-renowned martial artist born on Wilmington, Delaware, on August 19, 1957. Raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, she began training in the martial arts at age thirteen, a pursuit that quickly turned into a historic athletic career. Rothrock went on to become a five-time undefeated World Karate Champion in forms and weapons between 1981 and 1985, competing successfully against both men and women. She earned grandmaster black belts across multiple disciplines, including Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Eagle Claw Kung Fu, and Wu Shu. Her extraordinary physical capabilities caught the attention of global film executives during a commercial audition in Los Angeles, prompting her to move to Hong Kong to launch a professional cinematic career. 

Her film and television biography covers an extensive array of foundational martial arts classics and American action blockbusters, establishing her as the definitive queen of martial arts cinema. She made her feature film debut as Inspector Carrie Morris in the Hong Kong action classic "Yes, Madam!" in 1985, starring alongside Michelle Yeoh. She quickly became a massive star in Asian cinema, headlining prominent action features such as "The Millionaires' Express" in 1986, "No Retreat, No Surrender 2" in 1987, and "The Blonde Fury" in 1989. Returning to the United States to capture Western action audiences, she starred as China O'Brien in the martial arts hit "China O'Brien" in 1990 and its immediate sequel "China O'Brien II" in 1990. Throughout the 1990s, Rothrock dominated the direct-to-video action market, headlining the "Guardian Angel" franchise, starring in "Martial Law" in 1990, and playing the vengeful protagonist in "Lady Dragon" in 1992. On television, she made guest appearances on the fantasy series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" in 1996 and voiced herself in an episode of the animated comedy "The Simpsons" in 2004. After a brief hiatus, she returned to cinema to anchor the action ensembles "Mercenaries" in 2014 and "The Martial Arts Kid" in 2015. More recently, she starred as Eleanor in the action film "Black Creek" in 2024, played a prominent role in the thriller "The Last Kumite" in 2024, and joined the veteran cast of the legacy action feature "Operation Dragonfire" in 2026. 

While she does not possess a traditional commercial music discography or solo hit singles, her martial arts forms and physical choreography have heavily influenced the visual rhythm of electronic and synth-wave music videos. She made an appearance performing martial arts routines in the official music video for the electronic track "Fight Like a Girl" by the alternative band The Iron Maidens in 2012, and her classic 1980s film fight sequences were formally licensed to serve as the entire visual backing for the electronic synth-wave hit single "Blonde Menace" by the artist Cyberfist in 2021. 

Personal information regarding her family and private life centers on her deep commitment to the martial arts community and her role as a mother. Rothrock was briefly married to her childhood martial arts instructor, Ernest Rothrock, before their divorce. She has one daughter named Skylar Sophia Rothrock, who was born in 1999 and has also trained in the martial arts. Aside from her screen career, Rothrock is a dedicated martial arts teacher who operates seminars globally, holds a place in the Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame, and works as a certified private security contractor.

A notable quote regarding her experiences as a Western woman dominating the competitive Hong Kong film industry underscores her fierce work ethic: "When I arrived in Hong Kong, they expected me to just look pretty and let the stuntmen do the work, but I demanded to do every single hit, fall, and stunt myself because I wanted to prove that a woman's martial arts technique could be just as precise, powerful, and lethal as any man's."
