About Betty Grable

Elizabeth Ruth "Betty" Grable was a Caucasian-American best known for her film roles ot the 1930s and 1940s. She made 42 films during that time period, grossing over $100 million, and in addition was an in-demand pin-up girl, dancer, model, and singer. In 1946-7, no less an authority than the US Treasury Department listed her as the highest-salaried American woman; she earned over $3 million dollars during her career, which back then was a whole lot of smolyens.

For 10 consecutive years, from 1942-1951, she reigned supreme in Quigley Pott's Top 10 Box Office Stars, a feat matched only by Doris Day, Julia Roberts, and Barbra Streisand--though all were beaten out by Mary Picktord, the reigning 13-time champion. Congratulations, Mary! And to the rest of you, very well done!

She began her film career in 1929 at the age of 12 (after which she was summarily fired for using fake ID to obtain her berth). In the 1930s, she had contracts with both RKO and Paramount in which she produced a string of B movies, mostly portaying a series of college students. She first came to real prominence, however, in the Broadway musical DUNBERRY WAS A LADY (1939), which brought her to the attention of Paramount.

During WWII the 14th photo was the most popular pinup with the GI's (GI stands for Government Issue meaning US military personnel) among whom the vast majority said she had the best gams (legs) of any "actress" or model.

During the war the B-17 (bomber) Memphis Belle had a nose-cone painting that is quite similar to this pinup photo. The Belle was famous for being the first aircraft to complete (survive) 25 combat missions in the European Theater of Operations which meant the crew was to be transferred home. Wikipedia gives Joan Blondell from the movie Lady for a Night as the inspiration for the Memphis Belle although I was unable to find any similar images of Joan Blondell. I therefore leave it to the reader to join this arcane debate. For those interested the movie Memphis Belle (1990) gives the story of this plane and crew, this movie does get the major points of history fairly accurately.

Technically, or I suppose chronologically, the word Daddio is from the 50's, during WWII the term Joe was used and it was still in use when I was a GI in SE Asia during the Vietnam era. Once I was taking the Victory Liner (the bus) into Manila when, at one of the stops, a boy came on the bus selling snacks, beverages and so forth. He called out the various things he was selling and when he saw me he said, "Hey Joe! You want San Miguel?" which is the local beer that we called, The Nectar of the Gods. He certainly had the average GI pegged.
