About Asami Jo
A Profile
Asami Jo (born September 15, 1975) is a former adult video (AV) actress and television personality from Tokyo. Known by the nickname "Chami," she also performed under various stage names, including Shigemi Ueno, Ayuko Kokuritsu, and Yumi Kayama. Standing 162 cm tall, her reported measurements were B85 (C-cup), W60, and H88 cm.
Early Career and Rise to Fame
Before entering the AV industry, Asami Jo worked as a conventional talent. In 1995, under the name Shigemi Ueno, she gained significant attention as the face of major television commercials for Menard Cosmetics and Asahi Soft Drinks. Her striking beauty and clear complexion made her a natural choice for high-profile cosmetics campaigns.
In April of the same year, she joined the cast of TV Tokyo’s legendary late-night variety show, Gilgamesh Night, as a "sexy talent." Her bright, energetic personality resonated with audiences, and she eventually served as the show's host from July 1997 until its conclusion.
Adult Video Career
In October 1995, she made her AV debut with the label Alice JAPAN. Though she initially introduced herself as Ayuko Kokuritsu, she soon adopted the name Asami Jo. Because she was already a recognized face from mainstream commercials, her transition into the AV industry caused a major stir in the media.
Her career in adult film was brief, lasting only about ten months. She appeared in approximately 10 to 11 titles, with her final release debuting in August 1996. Her filmography consisted primarily of story-driven, "soft" content rather than hardcore films. Despite this, her bold performances—contrasting sharply with her "girl next door" TV image—were highly sought after, leading to reports of unauthorized uncensored versions circulating at the time.
Transition to Acting and Later Years
Following her retirement from the AV industry, Asami Jo successfully transitioned back into mainstream acting and television. In 1996, she appeared in several TV dramas, including a starring role.
Tokusatsu fans remember her best for her role from 1997 to 1998 as Shiborena (the human alias of Shizuka Samejima), the villainous female executive in Denji Sentai Megaranger. Her portrayal of the alluring yet dangerous antagonist was highly acclaimed. She continued to work across various media, including V-Cinema (direct-to-video), film cameos, and gravure photo books. Her final confirmed credit was in the March 1999 crossover film Seijuu Sentai Gingaman vs. Megaranger, where she was credited as Yumi Kayama.
Current Status
Since 1999, Asami Jo has remained out of the public eye. While there have been persistent rumors regarding her marriage and permanent retirement from the entertainment industry, no official details regarding her private life or current activities have been confirmed.
