About Angela Scoular

Bond Girl Ruby Bartlett ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Angela Scoular (full name Angela Margaret Scoular) was a talented British actress best remembered for her roles in two iconic James Bond films. She played the seductive Buttercup in the 1967 psychedelic Bond spoof Casino Royale (the non-Eon version with David Niven, Peter Sellers, and others) and the memorable Ruby Bartlett (one of Blofeld's "allergy girls") in the official Eon Productions entry On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) opposite George Lazenby—making her one of the few actresses to appear in Bond films from both eras.
Born in London, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and began her career in the early 1960s with stage work and TV appearances, including roles in adaptations like Romeo and Juliet (1965), David Copperfield (1966), and Wuthering Heights (1967). She also starred in films such as A Countess from Hong Kong (1967, directed by Charlie Chaplin), Great Catherine (1968) with Peter O'Toole, and Doctor in Trouble (1970). Later in her career, she appeared in TV shows like The Avengers, The Saint, and Blandings (1995), retiring from acting around 1996.
She was married to veteran British actor Leslie Phillips (known for the Carry On films and voicing the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter) from 1982 until her death; they had one son together.
Her life was marked by personal struggles, including battles with alcoholism, depression, bowel cancer, and financial worries. Tragically, she passed away at age 65 in Maida Vale, London, after ingesting a corrosive cleaning liquid (sulphuric acid drain cleaner) in an act ruled as suicide by the coroner.
Angela's legacy endures through her memorable Bond appearances, classic British film and TV work, and the charm she brought to her roles—often remembered fondly by fans of 1960s cinema.
Rest in peace, Angela—your grace, beauty, and contributions to screen history (especially those unforgettable Bond moments) continue to charm audiences. 🎥💔✨ AngelaScoular BondGirl #BritishActress
