Ana de Armas was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Santa Cruz del Norte. Her father worked various jobs, and her mother worked in the human resources section of the Ministry of Education. Growing up during Cuba's Special Period, she experienced rationing and blackouts, but described her early life as happy. De Armas had limited access to popular culture and decided to become an actress at age 12. She joined Havana's National Theatre of Cuba at 14 and left the four-year drama course early to avoid mandatory community service. At 18, she moved to Madrid to pursue acting.

De Armas began her career in Spanish cinema, starring in films like Una rosa de Francia (2006) and El edén perdido (2007). She then moved to Madrid and starred in the television drama El Internado (2007-2010). Despite feeling typecast, she continued working in Spain, starring in films such as El callejón (2011) and Anabel (2015). In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles and learned English before starring in films like Knock Knock (2015) and War Dogs (2016). Her breakthrough role came in 2019 with Knives Out, and she has since starred in films like No Time to Die (2021) and Blonde (2022). De Armas has dual Cuban and Spanish citizenship and resides in Vermont as of 2023.
