The subject's stare is directed at the viewer at all times, giving a confrontational element throughout a progressive loss of already meagre attire. The photographer is clearly telling a story: we may make gains to society for depletion of rescources (the crude-oil black of the underwear is hardly a coincidence), but ultimately there is only so far this can go.
